Alopecia Areata (Hair Loss)
What is it? Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy hair follicles, causing hair loss. Hair loss most often appears as smooth, round patches on the scalp but can occur anywhere on the body where hair grows. The severity of alopecia areata varies from person to person. Some individuals experience only a few small patches of hair loss, while others may develop more extensive hair loss. The condition is often unpredictable, with periods of hair loss followed by regrowth, and may recur over time.
