Dry skin, “xerosis”, is very common and occurs when the skin cannot maintain the appropriate amount of water content, or moisture. Everyone has different levels of natural skin moisture, and a lot of skin care practices can cause dry skin. It is important to constanly keep good care of dry skin, as it can crack, bleed and lead to infection and pain.

Most of the times appropriate skin bathing practices and moisturization practices can fix this situation.

A: Most of the time it is confined to the skin and your genetics and skin care practices. Sometimes there are certain nutritional deficiencies and other body organ dysfunction that can result in excessive dry skin. Rarely a skin biopsy is required, a lot of times we can offer some bloodwork to rule out other reasons.

A: The two biggest mistakes people make are applying a moisturizer to dry skin and trying to get there skin as “dry” as possible. It is important to use gentle, hypoallergenic skin care products and moisturize your skin while it is still damp. The “dry” skin feeling is stripping the skin of its natural oils, which can lead to cracked, painful skin.
